IBS was founded in 1978, focusing from the very beginning on the IBM midrange marketplace. Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, with a US HQ in Folsom, CA. IBS in 2007 claims more than 5,000 customers. The software has some light manufacturing capabilities, but has always been more of a distribution oriented application.

In April of 2007, Siemens made an unsolicited offer to purchase IBS for $47M. Siemens intends to integrate their shop floor execution systems with the IBS “ERP” systems.
